Description
“The Runaway" tells the story of a very unusual and complicated life of 88 year-old Kazimierz Piechowski, initiator of the most daring escape from Auschwitz, prisoner of the Stalinist regime, traveler and globetrotter.
On June 20, 1942 Piechowski (camp no. 918) after two years of imprisonment in Auschwitz, wearing SS uniforms and guns with three other prisoners managed to escape from the camp in the camp’s vice commander’s car. The documentary also depicts previously unpublished photos of SS-men from Auschwitz in everyday situations.
The film was produced by Zoyda Art, TVP 1 Documentary and the Polish Film Institute. The latter on several occasions has organized film’s screenings in cinemas and the Polish parliament. “The Runaway" was met with viewers’ very emotional response. Web sites dedicated to the topic were created and enthusiastic comments posted on TVP’s web site. Since its premiere on March 10, 2007 the film has been showcased many times in movie theaters, at film festivals and broadcasted on television.
