Description
We invite you to read the 31st issue of „Auschwitz Studies”, which contains three extensive historical articles and two reviews.
The main article, by Bohdan Piętka, is a thorough study about members of the Czech „Sokol” Association improsoned in Auschwitz. Their contributions to the Czech nation, their outstanding achievements, and above all, their tragic fate, can be read about in the article, in which many of them are introduced by name.
Therefore, this worki s nor only a historical text, but above all a moving memorial book dedicated to Czech patriots. The next article by Łukasz Martyniak desrcibes in detail the history of the KL Auschwitz Armaments Factory Zone, the site of operations of two German corporations: Friedrich Krupp A.G. and Weichsel Metall-Union Sils & Co. Krupp was initially interested in transferring the production of impact fuses for bombs to Auschwitz, but it eventually gave up, and its place was taken by Metall-Union Corporation, which in 1944 reached the production of 500,000 fuses per month. In the third article, authors Helena Kubica and Piotr Setkiewicz focused on the final stage of the so-called Zigeunerlager in Birkenau.
Describing the dramatic fate of the Sinti and Roma who fought for survival in summer 1944, they thoroughly analyzed an extremely important topic: the Roma uprising in the camp. Two reviews in this issue are devoted to the following books: „Im Zentrum der Endlösung. Alltag in der Todesfabrik Auschwitz” by Gideon Greif and „Mały Oświęcim. Dziecięcy obóz w Łodzi” by Jolanta Sowińska-Gogacz and Błażej Torański.
