Description

The main subject matter of issue 28 of “Auschwitz Studies” spans the elements of gas chambers and crematoria installations kept in the collections of the Auschwitz Museum.

The author of the paper, Igor Bartosik, Ph.D., presents the preserved elements of mass extermination apparatus, such as parts of crematoria ovens and gas chambers, along with remnants of installations located in such buildings. He also analyses their post-war fate. They were dismantled by the Germans before the liberation of the camp.

The historical commentary is supplemented with modern photographs of the facilities, poignantly illustrating both the impetus of the precisely planned, industrialised crime, as well the efforts of SS-men to hide this crime. Today, the remnants of the extermination devices, such as the doors of one of the gas chambers, even though only few and far between have been preserved, remain the silent witnesses to those atrocious, inhuman times.

“Among the most important remnants of extermination devices which operated in the area of Auschwitz, it is necessary to list the original parts of crematoria ovens: main doors of ovens, metal and ceramic grates, stretchers and carts for loading the bodies of the murdered, chests for ashes and elements for controlling the temperature in the ovens. Furthermore, equally important elements include remnants of gas chambers: elements of ventilation installations in chambers, hermetic doors and sealed windows through which a medium with a toxic substance used in KL Auschwitz to kill people, i.e. Zyklon B, was put inside.”

The issue also features an article by Łukasz Martyniak and Bohdan Piętka about camp bakeries, which produced bread for the prisoners and SS-personnel. Photos presenting the modern appearance of facilities which belonged to the complex of bakeries and archival SS documents supplement the issue. Adam Cyra’s paper features information about the repressions which residents of the Oświęcim Land had to face for helping the Auschwitz camp prisoners flee.

Penalties imposed on residents involved in offering such assistance included arrest, execution or imprisonment in the camp. The author lists the examples of escapes from the camp, along with penalties which affected specific persons as part of a bloody retribution.

The publication also contains reviews and discussions of literature items related to this issue.
